I’m just curious who here has either practiced or tends to watch/study other combat sports or martial arts. I keep hearing the line that boxing coaches just do boxing, but I keep coming across coaches with other backgrounds, so I thought I’d put up a quick poll
Have you had any involvement in any other combat sports or martial arts?
No, purely boxing for me
Yes, but watching only, as an armchair fan
Yes, as a participant (recreational or competitive)
Yes, as a coach
0voters
And if you’ve answered yes, what have you taken from that sport and brought into your boxing coaching?
Just answering my own question, but I took the idea that stance isn’t one fixed thing. I see a lot of boxers who are coached you must stand orthodox, with this foot here pointed this way and that one there like that, that’s your shape, stick to it.
In kickboxing, I was taught multiple stances, that even if I was a southpaw, how to manoeuvre and strike in an orthodox stance before resetting to my usual stance if that would give me an advantage. The shape should be stable and balanced, but it didn’t have to be static.
