Shadow Boxing - Pros and Cons

Hi Guys, Shadow boxing is a staple part of our sport. We hear of the benefits such as tactical prep, technical development, freedom to do anywhere, but what may be the potential problems which shadowboxing could cause when training without an opponent?

So, within my role as a Coach Educator I’m really strict on coaching Coaches to set very specific themes when they deliver shadow boxing.

I insist on it in every single session over the 4 days of a level 1 course and really drive home to them to observe and step-in if the theme is not being stuck to.

I talk a lot about how we can move a skill ( shadow boxing in this case) up the scale to make it more realistic and get it nearer to what actually goes on in a bout. Sorry Adam, I can’t remember the correct terminology for this!

Setting themes/conditions for shadow boxing is absolutely vital for me - to not do so is, in my opinion, a little lazy and a waste of an opportunity to observe and assess boxers.

I always think a Coach should know why they are setting shadow boxing ( any session actually) and have a very precise reason for it and how it fits into a session, block of training
